League History: The Beginning
The popularity of Street Hockey in Lancaster, Pennsylvania can be traced back to the early 1970s when a handful of neighborhood teams began playing on various playground areas around the city. As these teams became aware of each others existence competitive games were played on an informal basis.
Early in 1974 the neighborhood teams approached the Lancaster Recreation Commission about forming an organized league. This was realized in the Spring when League play began on the open-area basketball courts at Buchanan Park on Race Avenue.
In the Spring of 1975 the LRC moved the League's base of operations to Grant D. Brandon Park, games were played on the fenced-in basketball courts behind LRC headquarters on Fairview Avenue. The League would play at Brandon Park through the Spring of 1979.
In the Fall of 1979 a brand-new street hockey rink was opened by the LRC at Reservoir Park on the 700 block of East King Street. The LRC would continue to oversee League operations until the Summer of 2000 when Lancaster Dek Hockey, Incorporated was formed. The Fall 1979 season was the first season played at Reservoir Park, that is where this story officially begins with our next installment.
